Lead Carpenter

Position: Lead Carpenter   Reports To: Production Manager 

 Type: Full-Time   Hours: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM (half-hour unpaid lunch)

About the Role

The Lead Carpenter is responsible for successfully managing the job site, which includes being on time, staying on budget, and maintaining a high level of quality. In addition to being an excellent framing and finishing carpenter, the ideal candidate demonstrates good judgment, high ethical standards, strong communication skills, leadership abilities, and the ability to work independently.

The ideal Lead Carpenter is assertive, organized, and considerate to all co-workers, subcontractors, vendors, and clients. High performance and customer service are J.E.P. Contracting’s standards, and are expected of all employees.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Meetings & Site Prep

  • Attend all pre-construction and job site meetings with the production and sales teams, as well as all staff meetings
  • Install and maintain a company job sign at the job site
  • Install all dust, safety, and security protections before any work begins

Workmanship & Labor

  • Perform carpentry labor on site
  • Responsible for the workmanship quality of all work performed by carpenters, apprentices, and subcontractors
  • Ensure all products are properly installed in accordance with manufacturer instructions and warranty requirements

Communication

  • Maintain constant communication with the customer and proactively address any issues
  • Complete daily logs as required by J.E.P.’s communication processes

Change Orders

  • Do not perform any work outside the contract unless authorized by a signed change order
  • All change orders handled in collaboration with the Production Manager and the Sales Department

Safety

  • Adhere to J.E.P. Contracting’s safety manual and all OSHA regulations
  • Serve as the competent person on the job site; know where a copy of the safety manual is at all times
  • Enforce all company policies regarding safety, foul language, drugs, drinking, and smoking

Schedule & Coordination

  • Collaborate with the Production Manager to develop and implement the construction schedule
  • Coordinate with all on-site employees, subcontractors, and vendors
  • Develop a daily plan of action in advance and communicate it to the team

Subcontractor Management

  • Provide subcontractors with scope-of-work information before they arrive on site
  • Inspect each sub’s work upon completion to ensure it meets contract requirements
  • Authorize subcontractor payment through the accounts payable department

Inspections

  • Know the inspection process across all jurisdictions
  • Schedule and monitor inspections for all phases of work, including the final phase
  • Be on site when the inspector arrives, accompany them, and address any issues

Materials Management

  • Collaborate with the Production Manager on material planning
  • Complete a material takeoff during the planning phase for each job
  • Use the material list to order materials in advance of need
  • Receive deliveries, sign receipts, and verify quantities and quality
  • Maintain an operational inventory of necessary tools and safety equipment

Management & Team Development

  • Assist in hiring and evaluation processes for new carpenters and apprentices
  • Assist as needed at Home Shows or other company events

Requirements

  • 5–10 years of documented experience with extensive knowledge of all aspects of remodeling
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Professional appearance
  • Ability to read architectural drawings
  • Must have and maintain a Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License (CSL)
  • 10 hours of OSHA safety training
  • RRP Certification
  • Basic computer skills (email, ability to learn cloud-based software such as JobTread)

Compensation & Benefits

Pay

  • Competitive hourly rate; payroll processed weekly (Fridays)
  • Overtime rate applies after 40 hours
  • Time tracked electronically via JobTread

After 30 Days

  • 30-day performance check-in with management
  • Business cell phone provided if deemed necessary
  • Company credit card or Home Depot card for job-related purchases (if applicable)
  • Potential for company vehicle

After 60 Days

  • $50,000 life insurance policy provided (effective 1st of the following month)
  • Long-term disability (LTD) insurance provided

After 90 Days

  • Formal performance review; wage increase may be considered
  • Health insurance begins (1st of the following month)
  • Tufts Direct 2000 Silver Plan — individual premium fully covered by JEP
  • Employee responsible for co-pays, out-of-pocket expenses, and family member costs
  • Dental insurance begins (1st of the following month)
  • Delta Dental Premier — individual premium fully covered by JEP
  • Employee responsible for co-pays, out-of-pocket expenses, and family member costs
  • Vision insurance available
  • AFLAC supplemental accident plan provided (on and off the job)
  • Additional AFLAC coverage options available at employee’s expense
  • 7 paid holidays begin:
  • New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving + day after, Christmas Day
  • Floating holiday (birthday) — use any time with prior approval
  • 40 hours paid personal/sick time issued annually
  • Additional 3 unpaid sick days available for full-time employees

After 1 Year

  • 40 hours paid vacation for full-time employees
  • Renews on anniversary of hire date; up to 1 week may roll over
  • 1 week max at a time unless approved; scheduling subject to team coordination
